This is a bit of information I could find about Holtz Saddle Company. The Holtz Saddle Co. Was founded in 1947 by Bernard (Bernie) W. Holtz in the basement of the family home in Carrolltown, PA. Bernie always had a love for horses and started driving a team at the age of nine. As a youngster, he would go to the movies and watch the cowboys on the screen, wearing fancy saddles on their horses. Shortly before his 30th birthday, he saw a Palomino he liked so very much that he bought it. A fancy horse needed a fancy saddle so he designed and made his first saddle while working at night. It was not long after that the orders from all over the country began flowing into the small shop in Carrolltown. The saddles which Bernie completed were each an original in that no two were designed alike, which accounted for many of the nearly 600 hours that it took to finish a complete saddle ensemble. In 1958, Bernie built a shop on his property and expanded the store to include a wide variety of everything for the horse and rider. For the next couple of decades he operated the shop, continued to make sought-after silver and leather articles, and with his wife, Leona, raised nine children. Bernie made 44 silver saddles in his career, including one owned by Richard Boone, of Have Gun Will Travel fame and several for riders in the Pasadena Rose Parade. Here’s a rare find on a quality USA made. N Porter saddle that has a lot of years on it ahhh… The stories it could tell… And saddle remains in good using or collecting shape. The basket weave tooling is gorgeous and supple, the leather under the fenders is all I see to point out that is showing a lot of age and although it’s working as is, some may decide to put new leather straps to adjust stirrup leg length some day. Over the years, the saddle has had work done to it – I imagine it started out with the’tie’ type under leather fender and was upgraded to the Blevins some decades ago. (A Porter family member who has all the build cards looked this one up for me and it was made in May of 1944) The underside fleece also looks great – which is often a rarity with these older saddles. I do not know if that underside fleece is original or had been replaced along the way – but whatever the case, it was done right. The tapaderos are original and the stirrup turners have recently been added. The saddle comes with the straps and cinch shown in photos. Ready to ride or display this handsome little slice of Americana…. I will fondly remember my experiences team roping with one of the Porter men back in the late 1970’s in Glendale, Arizona (51st ave & Peoria)… He drove a station wagon and a straight load 2 horse, and rarely missed! A little PORTER history found on leatherworker net site. A book by Dan & Sebie Hutchins entitled: Old Cowboy Saddles & Spurs; 5th annual in which they wrote this about Newton Porter: Newton Porter was born in Independence, Missouri. The Civil War left him an orphan. A kind Aunt took him to live with her in St. While still in his teens he served his apprenticeship with a St. In 1875 Porter opened his first shop in Taylor, Texas. In 1881 a fire wiped out his prosperous business. He then moved to Abilene, Texas and stayed for 7 or 8 years. After a brief stay in Everett, Washington, he settled in Phoenix, Arizona and established the N. Porter Saddle & Harness Co. The Porter guarantee became famous. After Newton Porter died in 1906, Earl the oldest son took over managing the business with the same traditions his father had instituted. After Earl died in 1925, his youngest brother Fred took over the management. This company is family run and still in business today (1995)… PLENTY more pictures ready to share – just ask. Circle Y High Horse Barrel Saddle. I have the same saddle but. A 14.5 I retired after using daily for 13 years and wanted to get the same saddle. I finally found it but it was a 14. Thinking I could fit into a 14 I was wrong. Such an awesome saddle and so comfortable. Has barely been rode in. Can get more photos for you or will try to take more soon.
