Team Roping Saddle By Jim Taylor, Greenville, Tx. Billy Cook Stirrupsadded Info
TEAM ROPING AWARD SADDLE BY JIM TAYLOR, GREENVILLE, TX. STIRRUPS BY BILLY COOK. Condition is Obviously Used. This is an old team roping award saddle dated 1994. It was made by Jim Taylor and stirrups by Billy Cook have been added along with new slightly used stirrups leathers. When I got it I had the horn re-wrapped with rubber for help keeping that dally from slipping. My husband roped a lot of big old cows along with calves of all sizes, he always dallied and kept his horn wrapped with rubber for that reason. When he was on a young horse he always had a neck rope on them and he occasionally had to bale out of the saddle to avoid being caught in the upcoming wreck, the dally would hold long enough for the horse to get pulled in the right direction or pulled over, they learned quickly to keep facing the cow, the dally would slowly slip off so they weren’t injured, just educated. At one time we had a horse for my daughter, about the size of a Welch pony, he looked like a mustang, he was a really good roping horse. My husband liked to ride him when he wanted something really short to get on, my husband was also really short and jumped to get his foot in the stirrup on everything else we had. I guess some days he just didn’t feel like jumping. He caught anything on this little horse, cows that weighed about twice what the horse did and he held them all. I don’t know why I just told you all this but back to the saddle. I just recently had some questions about this saddle that I couldn’t answer so I took it to the local saddle maker and he did lots of new measurements and I took more pictures showing these but have no room to show them here but can send them if you’re interested. So we’re talking a 15 1/2 inch tree, Arizona bar, 7″ gullet, TM Roper, 3″ dally horn and 3 cantle. One billet is newer than the other, both in excellent condition and I had the lacing leathers replaced, I had the back center of the skirt re-laced and underneath the saddle, in the center between the lining I had new leather added. Over the years that part had been skinned up and torn from someone putting it on saddle racks and not lifting high enough. The rear cinch is like new, I cleaned and treated everything but the front cinch, I guess I’m getting lazy in my old age. This saddle is old but still has years of use left in it. It takes a long time and a lot of riding to wear out a saddle. The things that needed replacing have been replaced and all lacing leathers for the front and rear cinches have been replaced and it’s ready to ride and rope off of now. The lining is excellent, the rigging is good as you can see. You can also see in the pictures that this saddle has had a lot of ropes around the horn as the leather at the base of the saddle horn is worn away. I considered have the horn wrapped with rawhide which would have covered this, this could still be done, but I opted for the rubber since it is a roping saddle. This one is ready to go as is. I didn’t show all the conchos and such as I figured they weren’t as important as the saddle itself. The stirrups are marked Billy Cook as the maker, the leather treads are worn but these can be replaced, that was one investment I didn’t want to make right now. They are still useable as is. As I said, this saddle is from 1994 and shows some wear, I tried to get pictures of at least enough that you can see and get a good idea of the wear but this saddle is far from being worn out, the leather is good and soft with no cracks or rot. It’s still a great roping or just riding saddle. If you have any questions about this or any other listing of mine just contact me and I will be happy to help. I also have several other saddles listed, I’m what you might call “saddle poor” right now and can deal on a couple them if you’re interested. It’s supposed to be warm today so I guess that will be my outdoor project for today, at least they are smaller items and won’t take long to clean and treat. Thanks for looking and I hope you keep coming back as I also will list other items besides tack and such while I continue to try to downsize, you may find something that tickles your fancy.
